![]() But the subject matter was the same being it was the exact lyrics. The cadence of the artist was slowed down(a whole different artist not Kanye). It was more “rock” and not “rap” production. It had a whole different sound but with the exact same lyrics. I forgot who said it but I still remember a politician saying “We’re not against rap, we’re not against rappers but we are against those thugs!” That struck a cord with people and made parents ultimately hate rap and that trickled down to their kids and grandchildren and here we are today a product of the war on drugs.Īlso reminds me about 10 years back they were covering some Kanye West songs. The whole war on drugs campaign in the 80’s and 90’s was a direct attack on certain cultures and communities. IMO rap has had a bad wrap for so long because it’s been politicized, condemned and associated for so long with thugs and drugs. Rap is actually the most diverse genre of music so many styles of rap, so many type of rappers and with a wide content. Music is the universal language and if you simply block out a genre because of your stereotypes then you’ll never actually LISTEN to music. That statement alone shows his ignorance! He’s lumping a genre of music to one subject matter because of the stereotypes he’s probably associated with a specific demographic.
